10 Best Dyson Airwrap Dupes for Gorgeous, Glossy Hair

It saves time and can help reduce damage, as our Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab discovered: one analysis showed that the original Airwrap with the round brush attachment reached around 158ºF at its highest temperature and airflow, which is far cooler and therefore less damaging than a flat iron or curling iron that can reach temperatures of over 350ºF. According to Lab testing, some of the newer attachments reach lower temps, meaning even less damage potential than the original! The catch: the hefty price tag. At $599, this is a major splurge for most. Plus, there is a definitely a learning curve when using the tool at first.

A GH Beauty Award winner, Shark Beauty's sleek tool is a hairdryer, hairdryer brush and curler in one, with five attachments including brushes, curlers, a concentrator and a diffuser. In Beauty Lab testing, it reached a high air temperature, had strong airflow and dried hair samples in almost record time. "It’s proven versatile enough to see me through two different haircuts and I like the easy on-and-off of all of the attachments," one reviewer says. Plus, the handle is extremely versatile and can twist 90 degrees, making it easy to use for different styling needs. The one main difference between Shark and Dyson: a few reviewers noted that the Shark is a little noisier, can get hotter, and round and flat brushes can generate more tension during styling.

Styling, simplified. Boasting even more brush attachments than Dyson and Shark, BZ's hot air brush has five different brush attachments (two paddle and three round) for the most versatile styling options, no matter your hair length or type. Plus, like the Dyson, the dryer claims to use advanced negative ion technology and has ceramic coating on the brushes to prevent frizz and static. "This hair dryer makes me wish that I had long hair," says one Amazon reviewer. "There are so many styling tools that I can't use on my short crop." Reviewers also noted that it's lightweight, efficient and easy to use. Unike the Dyson or the Shark curling barrels that can be operated with a single hand, it relies on round brushes with varying diameters to generate the waves and curls, so it may not be as straightforward to achieve certain looks.

After noting over 333,000 Amazon reviews, the GH Beauty Lab had to put Revlon's One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer to the test. The hype is true: It achieved the fastest rate of drying hair compared to the other tools we tried. It does get super hot though, so keep that in mind. The brush has an oval, cylindrical shape that smooths hair and can glide through even coarse hair without pulling or tugging. “I liked how the brush head was large, which allowed it to dry more hair at once,” a tester reported. “It was good for creating smooth, straight hairstyles.” Our testing also revealed that it boosts shine and the included instructions are easy to follow. Our experts note, however, that depending on one's hair texture and length, one may not be able to achieve the variety of hair styles that one can easily achieve with the Dyson Airwrap.

Coming in hot (pun intended) as our top pick for hair dryer brushes in the Lab, 100% of testers agreed this brush was best for creating perfect style and volume on all hair types. Testers loved that it was easy to hold, creates fullness and has gentle heat (read: less damage potential). "I also liked that they use two types of bristles (short and long) as it grabbed the strands of hair and glided through," said one. It was ranked the quietest hair dryer brush, has a long cord and was the only winner with a wrap for storage. The only negative? It does not include a cool setting to set your style quickly. Similar to Revlon, this tool excels in achieving voluminous blowouts but may not be as straightforward to get the variety of hairstyles as with the Dyson or Shark.

A winner in our hair straightening brushes test, GHD is great for taming thick hair and reducing potential for frizz. When we tested it in the Beauty Lab, we loved that it didn't get too hot — it's preset to 365 degrees and has uniform heat distribution so it shouldn't get hotter in some spots than others. Our testers loved it too. "Did take the frizzy parts and smoothed it out. Can grab each area and the hair went through it easily and straightened it nicely," said one with fine, coily, curly hair. Our Beauty Lab evaluations revealed that Drybar's hair dryer brush has the gentlest heat among the products we tested, preventing hair from getting overly exposed to heat while still styling hair effectively. It reaches a maximum temperature of 167°F over five minutes of use, which is nearly 100ºF lower than the competition. The brush has a narrow barrel, which is perfect for fine or shorter hair and is super lightweight (less than a pound!), making it easy to hold and use. “I got great volume with this, yet my hair felt really smooth — it was comparable to a blow-out from a salon,” one user raved. While it works wonders on thin or short hair, this brush may not be ideal for thicker hair textures and it's not as versatile as some of the other tools on this list.

While it creates curls like a pro, it doesn't have the style options of the Airwrap or some other dupes. It's designed to be used on dry hair, so you need to either air dry or blow dry your hair first. And there is a learning curve (just like many other tools) but once you get it, it's super simple.

Thick, coarse hair can be a challenge to blow out and straighten. This brush dryer from Hot Tools, which contains a rotating temperature control, three heat settings and vent platforms, proved to style dense, coarse or curly strands quickly and efficiently in our Beauty Lab evaluation. In fact, 100% of expert testers found that it styled hair fast and combed through strands with ease. Reviewers also liked that the controls were the simplest to use compared with the other models. “I was surprised by the speed and how fast my hair went from wet to dry,” a user commented. It is on the heavier side so keep that in mind before using. Also, it may not be as straightforward to achieve the variety of hairstyles one can create with the Dyson or Shark.

If you are looking for a bouncy blowout, look no further. Conair's hot roller set includes 12 rollers of two different sizes (and 12 clips to keep them in place) to create different voluminous curly and wavy styles on dry hair. The rollers are powered by ceramic technology, which allows for even heat transfer across hair strands, and have a velvety covering to prevent heat damage. "My hair looked bouncy, voluminous and even shiny, and the best part was I could just put it in and go about whatever I wanted without standing in front of a mirror hurting my hands and arms for 30 minutes," shares one Amazon reviewer. Just note that the heat is one size fits all. There is no temperature adjustment or on/off switch — it turns on when you plug it in.
