In the world of hair styling tools, there are dryers, curling irons, flat irons and various hybrids. And then there's the Dyson Airwrap, the ultimate multitasking hair tool out there. "It is a hair dryer and styler in one," explains Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab Executive Director Birnur Aral, Ph.D. "It is designed to work with hair that’s damp and set the style while drying the moisture out of the strands. It works on different hair types and can generate a variety of hair styles, all while minimizing hair damage by using less heat than most styling tools." The newest Airwrap comes with six attachments, including a smoothing dryer, two sizes of barrels for curls, two sizes of smoothing brushes and a volumizing brush.

The one downside? The cost. This coveted tool retails for $599, making it out of reach for many. But that's where we come in. We gathered the top Airwrap dupes that achieve beautiful blowouts and hairstyles at affordable price points, including Lab-tested tools, GH Beauty Award winners, top sellers and editor picks.

Pros
  • Saves time
  • Dries and styles hair at once
  • Less hair damage potential
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Takes time to learn how to use properly

Meet the OG all-in-one styling tool. Dyson's original Airwrap launched in 2018 and started this multi-tasking tool phenomenon with its ability to dry and style hair (either straight, wavy or curly) with just one base and six interchangeable attachments. New versions came out in 2022 with updated attachments and newer technology. The best part? It saves time and can help reduce damage, as our Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab discovered: one analysis showed that the original Airwrap with the round brush attachment reached around 158ºF at its highest temperature and airflow, which is far cooler and therefore less damaging than a flat iron or curling iron that can reach temperatures of over 350ºF. According to Lab testing, some of the newer attachments reach lower temps, meaning even less damage potential than the original! The catch: the hefty price tag. At $599, this is a major splurge for most. Plus, there is a definitely a learning curve when using the tool at first.

Pros
  • Dries hair super quickly
  • Barrel can be bent to 90 degrees for more ergonomic styling
  • Multiple attachments for different uses
  • Effective cool shot
Cons
  • Some reviewers thought it was a little loud
  • Heavier than Dyson

A GH Beauty Award winner, Shark Beauty's sleek tool is a hairdryer, hairdryer brush and curler in one, with five attachments including brushes, curlers, a concentrator and a diffuser. In Beauty Lab testing, it reached a high air temperature, had strong airflow and dried hair samples in almost record time. "It’s proven versatile enough to see me through two different haircuts and I like the easy on-and-off of all of the attachments," one reviewer says. Plus, the handle is extremely versatile and can twist 90 degrees, making it easy to use for different styling needs. The one main difference between Shark and Dyson: a few reviewers noted that the Shark is a little noisier, can get hotter, and round and flat brushes can generate more tension during styling.

Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Has five brush heads for different hair textures and lengths
Cons
  • Curling brushes likely to require operation with both hands

Styling, simplified. Boasting even more brush attachments than Dyson and Shark, BZ's hot air brush has five different brush attachments (two paddle and three round) for the most versatile styling options, no matter your hair length or type. Plus, like the Dyson, the dryer claims to use advanced negative ion technology and has ceramic coating on the brushes to prevent frizz and static. "This hair dryer makes me wish that I had long hair," says one Amazon reviewer. "There are so many styling tools that I can't use on my short crop." Reviewers also noted that it's lightweight, efficient and easy to use. Unike the Dyson or the Shark curling barrels that can be operated with a single hand, it relies on round brushes with varying diameters to generate the waves and curls, so it may not be as straightforward to achieve certain looks.

Pros
  • Dries hair fast
  • Great value
  • Works on thick, coarse hair
Cons
  • Gets very hot
  • Cool shot is not powerful

After noting over 333,000 Amazon reviews, the GH Beauty Lab had to put Revlon's One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer to the test. The hype is true: It achieved the fastest rate of drying hair compared to the other tools we tried. It does get super hot though, so keep that in mind. The brush has an oval, cylindrical shape that smooths hair and can glide through even coarse hair without pulling or tugging. “I liked how the brush head was large, which allowed it to dry more hair at once,” a tester reported. “It was good for creating smooth, straight hairstyles.” Our testing also revealed that it boosts shine and the included instructions are easy to follow. Our experts note, however, that depending on one's hair texture and length, one may not be able to achieve the variety of hair styles that one can easily achieve with the Dyson Airwrap.

Pros
  • Gives great volume while using gentle heat
  • Quiet
  • Has a long cord and wrap for storage
Cons
  • No cool shot setting

Coming in hot (pun intended) as our top pick for hair dryer brushes in the Lab, 100% of testers agreed this brush was best for creating perfect style and volume on all hair types. Testers loved that it was easy to hold, creates fullness and has gentle heat (read: less damage potential). "I also liked that they use two types of bristles (short and long) as it grabbed the strands of hair and glided through," said one. It was ranked the quietest hair dryer brush, has a long cord and was the only winner with a wrap for storage. The only negative? It does not include a cool setting to set your style quickly. Similar to Revlon, this tool excels in achieving voluminous blowouts but may not be as straightforward to get the variety of hairstyles as with the Dyson or Shark.

Pros
  • Efficient and effective
  • Doesn't get too hot
  • Heats up quickly and has an automatic shut-off
Cons
  • You can only use it on dry hair

A winner in our hair straightening brushes test, GHD is great for taming thick hair and reducing potential for frizz. When we tested it in the Beauty Lab, we loved that it didn't get too hot — it's preset to 365 degrees and has uniform heat distribution so it shouldn't get hotter in some spots than others. Our testers loved it too. "Did take the frizzy parts and smoothed it out. Can grab each area and the hair went through it easily and straightened it nicely," said one with fine, coily, curly hair. "The brush heated up very quickly; it was easy to use and straighten my hair quickly," chimed in another tester with wavy hair. It has an automatic sleep mode that turns it off after 60 minutes in case you forget to switch it off. One key factor to note: this tool only works on dry hair and is designed to achieve smooth looks without sacrificing volume.

Best Dyson Airwrap Dupe for Fine Hair

Drybar Double Shot Oval Blow Dryer Brush

Pros
  • Gentle heat
  • Narrow barrel which is ideal for fine or short hair
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Not as effective for thick hair
  • Cool shot not powerful

Finally, a hair dryer brush tool that can help prevent damage to fine hair! Our Beauty Lab evaluations revealed that Drybar's hair dryer brush has the gentlest heat among the products we tested, preventing hair from getting overly exposed to heat while still styling hair effectively. It reaches a maximum temperature of 167°F over five minutes of use, which is nearly 100ºF lower than the competition. The brush has a narrow barrel, which is perfect for fine or shorter hair and is super lightweight (less than a pound!), making it easy to hold and use. “I got great volume with this, yet my hair felt really smooth — it was comparable to a blow-out from a salon,” one user raved. While it works wonders on thin or short hair, this brush may not be ideal for thicker hair textures and it's not as versatile as some of the other tools on this list.

Pros
  • Automatic barrel makes styling easier
  • Consistent results
Cons
  • Takes practice
  • Only creates curly and wavy styles on already dry hair

The name says it all: this GH Beauty Award winner creates the ultimate soft, beachy waves and (bonus!) does the work for you. The automated curling barrel twirls your hair around the barrel, taking away the guesswork and sometimes inconsistency of using a regular curling iron. "This curling iron creates beautiful loose curls (or tight curls if you prefer them)," shares one Ulta reviewer. "I get frequent compliments after using the iron." While it creates curls like a pro, it doesn't have the style options of the Airwrap or some other dupes. It's designed to be used on dry hair, so you need to either air dry or blow dry your hair first. And there is a learning curve (just like many other tools) but once you get it, it's super simple.

Pros
  • Dries hair quickly
  • Glides through hair easily
  • Controls are easy to use
Cons
  • Heavy
  • Cool shot not powerful

Thick, coarse hair can be a challenge to blow out and straighten. This brush dryer from Hot Tools, which contains a rotating temperature control, three heat settings and vent platforms, proved to style dense, coarse or curly strands quickly and efficiently in our Beauty Lab evaluation. In fact, 100% of expert testers found that it styled hair fast and combed through strands with ease. Reviewers also liked that the controls were the simplest to use compared with the other models. “I was surprised by the speed and how fast my hair went from wet to dry,” a user commented. It is on the heavier side so keep that in mind before using. Also, it may not be as straightforward to achieve the variety of hairstyles one can create with the Dyson or Shark.

Credit: Conair
Pros
  • Good value
  • Two different roller sizes for different styles
  • Creates bounce and volume
Cons
  • No temperature adjustment or on/off switch
  • Works best on rough blow-dried and smoothed out hair

If you are looking for a bouncy blowout, look no further. Conair's hot roller set includes 12 rollers of two different sizes (and 12 clips to keep them in place) to create different voluminous curly and wavy styles on dry hair. The rollers are powered by ceramic technology, which allows for even heat transfer across hair strands, and have a velvety covering to prevent heat damage. "My hair looked bouncy, voluminous and even shiny, and the best part was I could just put it in and go about whatever I wanted without standing in front of a mirror hurting my hands and arms for 30 minutes," shares one Amazon reviewer. Just note that the heat is one size fits all. There is no temperature adjustment or on/off switch — it turns on when you plug it in.

How we test the best hair styling tools

linebreak

The GH Beauty Lab tests hundreds of hair tools (including blow dryers, straighteners and curling irons) and assesses many factors for each, including the ease of use of controls, directions, the manual and safety features such as automatic shut-off. "For certain categories, we also recruit a consumer panel, with a variety of hair lengths, textures and densities who will use the stylers as intended and will then fill out a detailed survey," says Aral. "Depending on the study we use anywhere between five to 10 testers per product."

Aral adds that the Lab uses a specific set of protocols (whenever applicable) to determine the following for styling tools:

  • What temperature is reached on the surface of the styler that contacts hair strands at the highest heat/air flow settings
  • What temperature is reached on the surface of the styler that can get in contact with skin such as neck, scalp, ears and fingers
  • If the styler reaches the claimed temperature settings
  • If the styler has typical features of flatirons and curling irons
  • How fast the styler reaches the claimed temperature, which is usually carried out at the highest setting
  • How fast the tool dries a standard size hair swatch from wet to dry
  • If the styler has ample cord length

What to look for when shopping for a Dyson Airwrap dupe

linebreak

Finding a styler that has all the functionality of the Airwrap can be difficult but you can replicate the results in different ways.

✔️ "I would advise shoppers to think about the style(s) that they would like to achieve and perhaps consider investing in several tools that collectively will cover the range that the Airwrap can handle," says Aral. Meaning if you typically wear your hair straight, a smoothing blow dry brush would do the trick. Or if you go back and forth between curly and straight, a blowdry brush and curling iron are great options.

✔️ "Consumers can also look into refurbished Airwraps and find out if they come in with a warranty," says Aral. "I have had an original model for over five years, and it is still going strong."
