We revised this guide with current information and updated picks in May 2023.

Many hot sleepers find it impossible to get a comfortable night's rest without waking up in a sweat (even with the best sleep products). Blasting the AC and skyrocketing your electric bill is not the only solution: Dressing your bed with cooling sheets can help you get quality shut-eye and stay cozy all night long whether you suffer from night sweats or menopause hot flashes.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab regularly tests sheets of all types, from cotton sheets to organic sheets and beyond. In Lab tests, we check for durability, strength, shrinkage, moisture-wicking capabilities and pilling. We also have consumer testers weigh in on the softness of each sheet set. GH fiber scientists vet all cooling claims to ensure you aren't being duped! Based on extensive Lab and consumer testing in recent years, we have tested over 275 sheet sets and analyzed more than 13,000 data points to find the best cooling sheets.

What is the best cooling sheet set for most people? The Slumber Cloud Performance Sheet Set is our best overall cooling sheet pick. With a silky feel that uses Outlast cooling technology, these sheets actually store and release heat to keep your body at a more stable temperature. We love that this brand offers a 60-night sleep trial, so you have a chance to try it out before committing.

Pros
  • Natural materials with infused cooling technology
  • Instant cool to the touch feel
  • Thick bottom elastic band to keep it secure
Cons

Most cooling performance sheets are made with synthetic materials, but this unique sheet set from SOMÉ uses 100% cotton with infused cooling technology. It combines the natural feel of cotton you love with innovative cooling capabilities to help prevent night sweats in the first place. Note that these sheets have a slight hexagonal pattern to them that not all testers liked the appearance of.

TESTING NOTES: GH pros were impressed that it had an instant cool-to-the-touch feel while easily wicking away moisture in Lab tests. It features a thick elastic bottom band to keep the sheets perfectly secure. Hot sleeper testers at home swore by these sheets for actually being cooling, raving that they "did their job" and "worked way better than my usual sheets."

Pros
  • 37.5 cooling technology
  • Luxe-feeling sateen
  • Labels for easy bed making
Cons
  • Shrunk a bit after laundering

The silky feel of sateen can feel like a slip 'n slide if you are sweating all night. But the True Temp Sheet Set from SleepNumber uses 37.5 technology to prevent night sweats in the first place by absorbing and releasing heat, so you can enjoy a smooth feel without the heat.

TESTING NOTES: In the Lab, these proved to be strong and somewhat pill-resistant but did show slight shrinkage after laundering. Making your bed has never been easier with the convenient labels for short and long sides on the fitted sheet. Best Cotton Blend Cooling Sheets

Sijo CLIMA Cotton Sheet Set

Credit: Sijo
Pros
  • Cotton blend
  • Excellent fabric strength
  • High scores from testers for softness
Cons
  • Not as moisture-wicking in Lab evaluations

These sheets from Sijo combine the natural feel of cotton you love with the cooling performance of the brand's CLIMA fiber (nylon/recycled polyester/Tencel). These sheets were less moisture-wicking than other picks because they're made with 80% cotton; cotton absorbs fluid and takes longer to dry, meaning it doesn't wick away moisture well. We appreciate that you have the option to purchase this set with or without a flat sheet.

TESTING NOTES: Impressing GH Lab pros with its excellent fabric strength, this sheet set aced Lab testing, showing minimal shrinkage and pilling. With a near-perfect score from testers across the board, they received especially high marks for being soft and comfortable. One tester raved that "these sheets are luxuriously soft. The first night we got into bed on these sheets, we noticed right away that they felt like the sheets we slept on in high-end hotels." Multiple testers said they planned to buy a second set!

Pros
  • 90-day return policy
  • Personalized bedding bundle options

How we test the best cooling sheets

linebreak

In recent evaluations, our fiber scientists have analyzed over 13,000 data points after testing 275 different sheet sets to find the top-performing buys. In Lab evaluations, fiber scientists wash all sheets according to the care label to rate shrinkage, wrinkle-resistance and appearance after laundering. Pros also evaluate the fabric's strength and pilling resistance and use a moisture management tester to assess its ability to wick moisture. Consumer testers give feedback on the sheet set's softness, ease of bed making, smoothness, temperature regulation and more. For cooling sheets in particular, GH pros vet all cooling claims to ensure that you aren't being duped by a misleading brand.

The moisture management tester pictured here is running a moisture-wicking evaluation of cooling sheets to determine the fabric's ability to wick away moisture to keep you dry and cool. The machine drops a consistent amount of sweat-like solution on a piece of fabric to see how quickly the liquid disperses and dries.

What to look for when shopping for the best cooling sheets

"

When shopping for sheets, many are overwhelmed by the surprising amount of fabric options available. While each material has its own pros and cons, our fiber scientists explain which fabrics and features you should look for as a hot sleeper:

✔️ Material:

  • Polyester and other synthetics: Synthetic fabrics like polyester and rayon are popular for wicking away moisture while staying silky smooth. For even better performance, look for polyester yarns with added cooling technologies.
  • Tencel/lyocell: As a regenerated cellulose fiber, these fabrics have a luxuriously silky feel that also feels cool to the touch with excellent moisture management capabilities.
  • Cotton: While cotton doesn't wick away moisture as successfully as synthetic fabrics, cotton lovers can still find cooler options. Opt for percale weaves, as they're more breathable and airy than sateen picks.
  • Linen: Like cotton, linen is also a natural fabric that is popular for its loose weave, providing excellent airflow. Note that linen sheets tend to be less soft than other materials.

✔️ Specific cooling technologies such as Outlast or 37.5 actually store and release heat throughout the night, so your body stays at a stable temperature. To test how moisture-wicking fabric is (a.k.a. how well the sheets will dissipate sweat to keep you at a more consistent body temperature), you can place a drop of water on it. You'll want the water to immediately spread out and dry quickly, but avoid fabrics where the water beads. They'll feel sweaty!

✔️ Thread count refers to the number of yarns in a square inch of fabric, but it shouldn't be a major factor when deciding which cooling sheets to buy. In Good Housekeeping evaluations, thread count did not correlate with performance, but when shopping for 100% cotton, single ply weaves, our tests found that 300 to 500 is ideal.

✔️ Pocket depth corresponds to the maximum mattress height the sheets can accommodate. Before purchasing, we recommend measuring your mattress's height (and topper if you have) to ensure your new sheets will fit properly.

    Are "bamboo sheets" cooling?

    linebreak

First, "bamboo sheets" don't really exist! While many brands may sell sheets with "bamboo" fabric, the material doesn't actually contain any bamboo. It's actually rayon, which is a synthetic fiber that uses the wood pulp from bamboo and dissolves it in chemicals to the point that it no longer exists in the final fabric. The Federal Trade Commission has sued some companies for false bamboo labeling as the brand needs to list the manufactured name for rayon fibers.

Types of rayon include viscose, lyocell and modal, which are known for being moisture-wicking and feeling silky and cool to the touch — ideal for cooling sheets! Avoid any sheet sets with false "bamboo" labeling as the brand is greenwashing and misleading their consumers. Instead, opt for Tencel, lyocell, viscose or modal fabrics with excellent cooling performance.
