    Pros
    • Good variety of brands and styles
    • Makes high-end designers more accessible
    • Flexible plan options
    Cons
    • Some noted occasional damaged items or odors

Rent the Runway offers the widest range of styles of the clothing rental services we have tested. It carries garments across all categories — formal dresses for special occasions, quality work clothes, high-end athleisure garments for workouts and lounging, easy-to-pack sets for a tropical vacation and even more. The membership for women is the most popular clothing subscription box among our survey panelists, and we think it offers the best value.

To start, you choose five items to wear. If you opt for the basic plan that costs $94 (available for a discount for new members), you keep these five pieces for the entire month, but if you're willing to spend a little more, you'll have the option to swap your picks out for new styles. For $144, you can swap your picks once to receive a total of 10 items, $193 gets you two swaps and 15 items and the $235 plan includes three swaps and 20 total items.

Our survey panelists said Rent the Runway was easy to use, had quick delivery and was worth the cost. A few of our testers noted experiencing some delays or receiving damaged items, but the brand's helpful customer service team quickly resolved the issues. Users specifically highlighted the variety of options to choose from and loved being able to wear expensive clothing that they couldn't otherwise afford. (Though if you do want to purchase the items you rent, you can snag them at a discount.)

Cost: $94-$235/month | Items per box: 5 pieces | Additional features: Item swaps available depending on membership plan, discounts for new members, purchase items for a discounted price

    Pros
    • Users say clothes are in great condition
    • Plans start at just $29/month
    • Unlimited exchanges for all customers
    Cons
    • Items sent are based on availability

Haverdash is a women's clothing rental subscription, but it works differently than Rent the Runway. You search through the website's offerings and create a virtual "closet" filled with the items that you like on the site. When it's time to ship your items to you, Haverdash will mail items you included in your closet based on their availability, so you don't get the final say over the items you'll receive. When it's time to swap out your items, you'll return all of the pieces at one time to receive more selects from your virtual closet.

If you're interested in trying out a clothing rental service but don't want to break the bank, this one stands out because of its low cost. You're able to try out trends and add new pieces to your closet without having to spending a fortune. You can choose up to four pieces at a time for $75, but most users opt for three pieces at $59 per month. The plans start at just $29 for one garment, and all of the plans include unlimited swaps.

This one is more affordable because the garments aren't as expensive as the ones offered on other rental sites, and there isn't as much assortment to choose from, but you can't beat the incredible value. Plus, users told us the ordering process was simple, the clothes were stylish and everything came in great condition.

Cost: $29-$75/month | Items per box: 1-5 pieces | Additional features: Unlimited item swaps, refer others for store credit

Best Clothing Subscription Box for Families

    Stitch Fix

    Pros
    • Available for men, women and kids in a wide range of sizes
    • Scheduling flexibility
    • Users liked trying new things picked for them
    Cons
    • You don't get to approve items before they ship

Unlike most styling services that carry only women's clothing, Stitch Fix has options for the entire family. There are kids' sizes from 2T to size 18, women's sizes XS to 3X with plus, petite and maternity options and men's sizes XS to 3X with some tall options. It's one of the most popular clothing subscriptions on the market, and you can get started for just a $20 styling fee that can be applied to any purchases you make.

First, you'll fill out a style quiz complete with your typical sizes, preferred price range, favorite brands and personal aesthetic. You don't work directly with a stylist to choose your items, but Stitch Fix will curate five pieces based on your quiz responses. And you won't be able to see the clothes before they ship, but some of our survey respondents said they enjoyed the element of surprise.

You have the option to choose which date your "fix" of clothing will be delivered, and you have three days to try on the garments before deciding if you want to keep any styles or send them back. The styles you receive are priced based on the range indicated in your quiz, but on average, they cost between $20 and $100. If you choose to buy all of the styles, you'll receive a 25% discount off your entire purchase. Overall it got mixed ratings from respondents, with complaints ranging from the clothing being low quality to items being too expensive. On the flip side, several people said this service helped them try pieces they normally wouldn't have picked out on their own.

Cost: $20 styling fee (credited toward your purchases) | Items per box: 5 pieces | Additional features: Discount if you buy all items

    Pros
    • Unique, fashion forward styles
    • Favorite of GH staffers and panelists
    • High-end items available
    Cons
    • You can't swap items during the month

If you're looking to spice up your wardrobe, Nuuly has fun prints and unique styles that are more fashion-forward than other clothing subscriptions. It's owned by URBN, the parent company of Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People and more, so there are tons of stylish options from those brands, as well as garments from other popular labels and Nuuly-exclusive collaborations with trendy designers like Lisa Says Gah and Selkie.

It's less expensive than other high-end rental services at just under $100, but you don't have the option to swap out the items during the month. Instead, you can scroll through the site and choose six items that are delivered all at once (bonus items can be added for an extra fee). At the end of your 30-day rental, you'll send them all back and swap them for six new items to rent for the following month.

Users on our panel rave about this service, giving it high scores across the board and describing it as "fun" and "fashionable." Many GH staffers who have been using Nuuly for years agree, sharing that there's clothing for any and every occasion — from work to weddings to parties and vacations — and there are tons of different styles to choose from including boho, preppy, edgy, classic and more.

Cost: $98/month | Items per box: 6 pieces | Additional features: Bonus items available for a fee, refer others for store credit, purchase items for a discounted price

    Pros
    • Wide variety of styles and price points
    • View items before they ship
    • Work with a personal stylist
    Cons
    • Some testers noted receiving lower quality pieces

Dailylook is a styling service that offers a wide range of both high-end designer brands and affordable pieces under $100 to choose from. There's also a good assortment of everyday basics and fun pieces for a night out. It's similar to Stitch Fix because you fill out a style profile and receive a curated selection of garments to try, but you actually get to work with a personal stylist who goes as far as checking out your social media to get a sense of what your personal style is like. You receive a whopping 12 items including clothing and accessories like jewelry and shoes, and you can see the pieces that have been selected for you ahead of time. You can even swap some of them out before they ship if there are things you don't like.

It's a true subscription with monthly, bi-monthly and quarterly plans, and you're charged a $40 styling fee that can be credited toward any purchases you make. When we tested this service out, we found the unboxing experience to be particularly exciting since there were so many different pieces to try, and if you choose to keep three or more items from your box, you'll receive a discount. The one callout is that despite the pricier styling fee, there were still a few complaints of some lower quality garments being sent to testers.

Cost: $40 styling fee (credited toward your purchases) | Items per box: 7-12 pieces | Additional features: Monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly plans, discounts when you buy three or more items

    Pros
    • Plenty of quality options for everyday basics
    • Maternity styles
    • Clothing and accessories available
    Cons
    • Inventory was limited when we tried it

Le Tote has a wide assortment of rental clothing and accessories for women, but we've found the majority of items to be everyday basics ranging from jeans to solid color sweaters to simple dresses. On top of that, the brand offers an entire service for maternity clothing rentals, so you don't have to buy clothes that you'll only wear during your pregnancy and leave in the back of your closet.

There are two membership options with Le Tote. The most popular plan is $79 per month and lets you pick four clothing items based on what's available, and you can swap out all four pieces an unlimited number of times at your convenience. If you're interested in trying out some fun accessories, you can opt for the other plan, which is also $79 with unlimited swaps but includes three clothing items and two accessories.

When we tested this service out, we found the inventory to be a bit limited, with one user sharing that when she did find a style she liked, it wasn't uncommon for it to be unavailable in her size. But the delivery was quick and convenient, and testers gave the service high marks for quality, explaining that the garments came in good condition without damages and weren't overworn.

Cost: $79/month | Items per box: 4-5 pieces | Additional features: Unlimited item swaps, buy items for a discounted price, bonus items available for a fee, discount for new members

    Credit: Gwynnie Bee
    Pros
    • Available in women's sizes 0-32
    • Flexible plans
    • Unlimited swapping each month
    Cons
    • Don't get to choose final items

Available in sizes 0 to 32, Gwynnie B's clothing rentals are more size-inclusive than other clothing subscriptions we've tried. There's a good mix of high-quality everyday casual pieces and dressier items from popular brands that you would typically find at department stores.

This subscription also stands out for its flexible plan. You can rent anywhere from one item at a time for $49 per month to 10 items at a time for $199 a month, and there's unlimited exchanging regardless of the plan you choose. Like with some other popular rental services, you won't get the final say in what is included in your box, but you get to select items you like from the website to keep in a virtual closet, and the pieces you receive each month are pulled from that closet based on availability. If you really love something that you receive, you can purchase it for a discounted price, so it's yours to add to your wardrobe.

Cost: $49-$199/month | Items per box: 1-10 pieces | Additional features: Unlimited item swaps, buy items for a discounted price, discount for new members

    Pros
    • In-depth style quiz
    • Activewear service is also available
    • Ability to request certain items
    Cons
    • Longer shipping times

Similar to other virtual styling services like Stitch Fix, Wantable sends you a box of garments styled to your personal taste every month. But Wantable's style quiz is a bit more in-depth, and you can give your stylist more input as to what you like and dislike by scrolling through images of clothing and requesting or declining specific items. All of this input helps to curate the perfect collection of pieces for you to try on.

For a $20 styling fee, you'll receive seven items in each box, and you have five days to decide if you want to keep them. The $20 fee is credited toward your purchase if you choose to buy anything, and most of the styles available are priced between $50 to $100. If you buy at least five of the seven items, you'll receive a discount on your entire purchase. You can pick the frequency of how often you get the subscription can cancel at any time. There are also fitness subscriptions for workout clothing for men and women.

    Pros
    • Access to expensive designer clothes
    • Unlimited swaps each month
    • Styles range from casual to formal
    Cons
    • You don't pick specific items for each shipment

Rebecca Taylor's clothing can cost hundreds of dollars a piece, making it unaffordable for some shoppers, but this rental service gives you unlimited access to the high-fashion and high-quality garments for a monthly rate. It's truly a great value for what you get, and you can choose everything from casual weekend clothing to business attire to cocktail dresses and much more.

It works just like some other clothing subscription services where you scroll through the brand's offerings and then fill a virtual closet with the pieces you love the most. The items will be sent to you each month based on what's available, so you won't be picking out specific pieces. You also need to return all of your items at once to get something new, but you're able to swap everything out an unlimited amount of times to constantly refresh your wardrobe. This service costs more than others, but you get four pieces at a time and the average cost of the items you're renting is much higher than with other subscriptions.

    Pros
    • No styling fee
    • Available in sizes 12M-16 youth
    • Trendy designs that kids love
    Cons
    • Some users noted receiving defective items

This kids-only subscription box has styles for boys and girls from size 12 months through youth size 16 (XXL). Unlike other services, Kidpik has no styling fee, so there's no cost at all to you if you decide to return everything in your shipment. Like with other online styling services, you complete a style profile for your kid, and a package is specially curated to match your child's style and sent to your home. With this one, you can't see the selected items before you receive it, but our staffers have had great experiences receiving trendy items that their kids love.

Each box consists of six to twelve items of clothing, shoes and accessories that you can mix and match to create at least three head-to-toe outfits. You'll have an entire week to try out the clothing before deciding to buy anything, which is more time than offered with other subscription services. Plus, if you choose to keep all of the style picks in your box, you'll get a discount between 25% to 35% off your total purchase. Know that some testers have reported receiving items with damages like missing buttons or holes in seams, but you can return or exchange any damaged pieces.

    Pros
    • Membership exclusive pricing
    • Variety of styles available
    • Flexibility to use credit on other purchases
    Cons
    • Not ideal for everyone's taste

Unlike the other services that are focused on personal styling clothing rentals for the workplace or special events, Fabletics is an activewear-specific subscription. By becoming a member, you have access to discounted pricing each month on quality fitness outfits that start at just $59.95 for two-piece sets. If you choose not to buy something with your membership, you'll be able to use that $59.95 credit on the site at a later time (just know that the credits expire after 12 months), and you can skip months any time.

Fabletics styles include workout pants, tops, sports bras, swimwear and more, most of which come in a variety of trendy styles from neutral colors to bold, fun prints. There's also a shop for medical scrubs, maternity and plus-size options and accessories like hair ties, yoga mats and workout bags. Plus, you can use Fabletics credits on popular shapewear brand Yitty. Although both men's and women's styles are available at Fabletics, there's a bigger assortment for women. You can even try on the workout fits at one of the brand's retail stores.

    Pros
    • Unlimited swaps
    • Styles for multiple occasions
    • Affordable pricing
    Cons
    • Items are picked for you based on your virtual closet

For new pieces that you can wear every day, try the clothing subscription service offered by New York & Company. It's one of the cheapest rental services out there, but the clothing selections are high-quality, and you get four to five items at a time with unlimited swapping throughout the month. There are lots of styles to choose from with options for work and weekend outfits, and clothing ranges in sizes XS to XXL.

The rental works similarly to other clothing subscription services. You add items from the website to your virtual closet, and you receive a shipment of items based on what's available at the time. When it's time to return your items or swap them out for new styles, you'll need to send back all of the pieces. For just $49 a month, you can choose between two rental programs: four pieces of clothing or three fashionable clothing items and two stylish accessories. If you really love something that you receive in your box, you can buy it for a discounted price.

    • Access to high-end items at a lower cost
    • Good mix of fashion and beauty items
    • Access a members-only shopping platform
    Cons
    • Items are pre-selected

It's not clothing, but Rachel Zoe's Curateur subscription box (formerly called Box of Style) comes filled with fashion accessories and beauty products for a combined value of over $450. Unlike other fashion subscription boxes where you pick and choose which items to buy, you pay a flat rate of $125 to keep every item in the box.

You'll receive a box of five items on a quarterly/seasonal basis, and if you choose to pay for all four boxes up front, you'll receive each box for a discounted price of $112.50. Sometimes, there's the option to make selections for the items you'll receive in your box (like picking a pair of sunglasses from a choice of two or opting for a black versus a pink clutch), and as an added perk you get access and discounts to a member-exclusive shopping site full of even more accessories and beauty deals.

How we choose the best clothing subscription boxes

    linebreak

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test and review apparel of all kinds in the Textiles Lab. To evaluate clothing subscription boxes, we first reviewed dozens of services — from monthly rentals where you borrow garments to personal styling services where you can buy the clothing. More than 40 GH analysts, editors and survey panelists who have tried the subscriptions out first-hand gave their thoughts on the services. Plus, we were able to try out some of the services for ourselves — filling out style profiles, making clothing selections, receiving the garments and wearing them out to get a better idea of what the services had to offer. We chose style boxes that performed well in our evaluations, were favorites of our survey respondents, have rave reviews from real users and offer unique options.

What to look for when choosing a clothing subscription box

    linebreak

Here are some things to keep in mind, regardless of the type of clothing subscription box you get:

✔️ Style profile: For some of the services, you'll fill out a style profile with your size information, body type, style preferences and more. Make sure you limit your selections to what you'll actually wear. Some of these systems are automated and by being choosy, you can avoid receiving unwanted surprises and pieces that aren't your style.

✔️ Shipping: Most clothing subscription services offer free shipping both ways, so you don't have to worry about any added costs. Shipping speeds vary by service. Some rentals can take a week to make an exchange, so make sure to check before you sign up if you're worried about the timing of receiving your items.

✔️ Items per box: The number of items you'll receive at one time varies from service to service, but you can usually expect to receive anywhere from two to 10 pieces. Some brands will offer extra items upon sign up or as a perk for regular customers. You may also be able to switch out your picks throughout the month.

✔️ Time period: One rental period typically lasts 30 days, so you can wear the clothes for about a month before sending them back and being charged for the next rental cycle. If you opt for a style box with items for purchase, you may only have a few days to try on the pieces before deciding if you want to keep or return them.

    Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

    How clothing subscription boxes work

    linebreak

There are two main types of clothing subscription boxes to choose from:

✔️ Rentals: You pay a monthly fee and get to borrow clothing. With some services you'll pick exactly which items to get with each shipment, while with others you create a virtual closet of styles you like, and you'll be sent what's available. The clothes are cleaned between users (you don't have to do it at home!), and you often have the option to buy and keep your rented items at a discounted price.

✔️ Purchase: A personal stylist or automated system puts together a shipment of clothing for you based on a survey you fill out about your style preferences. You receive the items, try everything on at home and decide what you to buy or return. There's usually a styling fee, but that money typically goes toward anything you purchase from that box.
