Clever Halloween costumes come and go every October. But the chance to knock it out of the park with a great maternity costume? That only comes along every once in a while.

And sure, any costume can be a maternity costume if you're pregnant. But there are some out there that are extra great because they put the bump front-and-center and celebrate the newfound milestone in your life. These are some of the best pregnant Halloween costumes of 2023 — the ones that make the most of the pregnant status.

Some outfits inspired by pop culture and feature some of our favorite pregnant characters from TV and movies (like Fargo or Juno). There are lots of cute ideas that are a play on different expressions for pregnant, like "preggo" or "bun in the oven" if you're into some punny ideas. And since it's rare that you can re-use or recycle a maternity costume, there are plenty of ideas that you can make using items of clothing you already own. These are a win-win-win, since they're inexpensive, easy to DIY at the last-minute and often very comfy (very important). Pick your favorite, and your bump will be the star of the night.

Midge Costume

Hi, Barbie! Fans of this year's Barbie movie have already been reminded of Midge, the "pregnant" doll who came with a baby inside a magnetic, removable womb. (In the film, she's played by Emerald Fennell.) Celebrate Midge's 20th-ish anniversary and all things Barbie Land with Midge's signature maternity look. All you need is a floral dress with a purple ribbon and a long wig with two braidspurple jelly wedge heels optional. (You are pregnant after all, and those do not look comfortable.) And, if you want to make it a family Halloween costume or group costume, you'll be tickled to know that Midge sometimes came packaged with Allan (shown here in an easy-to-find blue flannel).

Cat With Yarn Costume

Mike Garten

Create your own spin on the classic cat costume by adding a "ball of yarn" to your baby bump. Start by looping the yarn over and over into several loops — don't worry about it being perfect, the idea is for it to be messy. Then pin the ends of the loops onto your shirt to create a "ball" effect, and let the rest of the yarn spill out for you to play with.
