The tween years? They're a whole new ballgame. Now that they're 10 years old, they're probably ready to leave behind anything they deem too babyish and cast their eyes toward the future. That means when it comes time to get gifts for kids this age, it's time to think big.
That doesn't mean the gifts have to be expensive, though. There are plenty of affordable options that meet them where they're at developmentally and help them explore their interest, from building sets that are more complex to STEM kits that dive deep into more sophisticated concepts to art supplies that let them try out new techniques. And just because they're bigger, it doesn't mean they're no longer interested in cool toys!
It may seem hard to find gifts that meet all these criteria, but the Good Housekeeping Institute has figured out what 10-year-old boys like through a fool-proof method: soliciting feedback from actual 10-year-olds. Lab experts evaluate hundreds of toys and gifts each year, checking out the safety and quality of each one. Then, and most importantly, it hands the toys over to real kids, who assess the fun factor. (Each year, the best wind up Good Housekeeping Best Toy Award winners.) We put those results together with best-sellers and editor's picks, and these emerged as the best toys and gifts for 10-year-old boys in 2023.
In 2023, STEM sets still rule the day. Whether it's trying out virtual reality, building robots or doing at-home science experiments, science-themed toys rated highest. Similarly, construction toys also scored high marks, including the ever-popular LEGO, which is a hit with kids of all ages. And then, when it comes to those just-a-little-something gifts, fidget toys are still pretty popular for every 10-year-old boy on your list.
You'll also find in this guide: How we choose the best toys for kids, more about our experience in toy testing and gifts for every age and occasion.
